Second Grade Curriculum
Overview of our goals and expectations for the year. This will give you a feeling for things to come throughout the year and the tone of the classroom.
Development in Reading
- Learn to use different strategies in order to become more independent readers.
- Extend their competence in decoding and comprehension.
- Learn to use higher order thinking skills in their comprehension
- Develop and maintain a love for reading.
Reading Curriculum Overview for 2nd Grade:
- Develop different strategies for decoding and comprehending text independently (sounding out, chunking, context and picture clues)
- Identify and use literary components of character, setting, conflict/ problem, events, conclusion, main idea, and details.
- Learn to understand and use higher order thinking skills in comprehension such as predictions, inferences, cause and effect, character mapping, and point of view.
- Identify and use parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns.
- Identify and use contractions, antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms.
Development in Writing
- Understand and learn how to use process writing. (prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, publishing, sharing)
- Understand and learn how to write a 5 sentence paragraph (topic sentence, 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence).
- Develop and maintain a love of writing.
Writing Curriculum Overview for 2nd Grade:
- Will Write Clearly and Effectively (develop concepts and designs, write appropriately for audience and purpose, apply writing conventions such as complete sentences, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.)
- Will Write in a Variety of Forms for Different Audiences and Purposes
- Will understand and use the Steps of the Writing Process (pre-write, draft, revise, edit, publish)
- Will analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of written work
- Will develop Reflective Thought and Positive Moral and Religious Values through Writing
Growth in Faith
- Learn to make prayer an integral part of their life.
- Develop a personal relationship with Jesus.
- Understand the gift of the sacraments especially Eucharist and Reconciliation.
- Receive First Reconciliation in December and First Eucharist in May.
Religion Curriculum Overview for 2nd Grade:
- Discovering our Parish (identify places and items found in the church and used during the Mass)
- Understanding the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation
- Understanding the Sacrament of Reconciliation (in-depth study in order to prepare for Sacrament of Reconciliation)
- Understanding the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist
- Understanding the Sacrament of Eucharist (in-depth study in order to prepare for the Sacrament of the Eucharist)
Develop investigative minds for Science and Social Studies.
Science Curriculum Overview for 2nd Grade:

Social Studies Curriculum Overview for 2nd Grade:
- Family Ties (family trees, heritage, heirlooms and traditions)
- Earth, Our Home (the fifty states, countries around the world, natural resources, compass rose, reading and using maps, landform maps.)
- A Working World (goods, services, production in farms and factories, trading goods and services, use of money, reading and using route maps)
- We the People (government structures of city, states, and country, exploring Washington D.C., our flag, flags from other countries, use of laws, understanding and using timelines)
- Discovering Our Past (brief history of our country including Native Americans, explorers, colonists, Revolutionary War, Civil War, slavery, pioneers, use of grid maps)
- People, Places, and Holidays (special Americans, special places in America, holidays, celebrations, and customs in the U.S. and other countries, understanding and using bar graphs)
